Wawona Campground is the first site in Yosemite. We booked it months before we came on the trip. Wawona site is really near Mariposa Grove and about a 30 min mountain drive from Yosemite Valley. We are pleased we did book, as Yosemite Valley, is very VERY busy, and even though the campgrounds surrounding the valley, have been releasing sites while we are there. A queue of 40 RV’s had formed at 8am, to get in there first. We decided that Wawona was actually a more quiet and remote site so stayed there for the 3 nights.

On the drive from Yosemite Valley to Wawona, we pass some magnificent views the first being Bridalveil Falls, then on through Tunnel view which is a stunning view across the Valley taking in El Capitan, Half Dome, Bridal Veil Falls, Cathedral Range. We stopped at this every time we drove past so we could get out and breath it in. Magnificent. Turns out, staying out of the valley has its advantages.
